About Ware Shoals, SC - Happy to be your hometown Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor!
Ware Shoals, South Carolina has been a mill town throughout most of its history. The original mill was operated by the original Ware, one William Ware, who built a grist mill at Rutledge Ford on the Saluda River. By 1906 this grist mill had been replaced by a textile mill, which was replaced again in 1916 by a new mill twice its size. In 1926 a school was built to educate the mill workers’ children, and the building is still used today to house Ware Shoals High School, making it one of South Carolina’s oldest operational school buildings. The Riegel Textile Corporation, as the mill came to be known, financed not only the school but also the later construction of a department store called the "Big Friendly," a community center called "Katherine Hall" and even sponsored a semi-pro baseball team that played in Riegel Stadium, still in use today as the sports complex at the high school. The mill closed down in 1985 at a time when many U.S. mills and factories were shutting down, and Riegel Textiles was bought up by Mount Vernon Mills.
While Ware Shoals today may no longer be a major center of industry, it has plenty of attractions to offer residents and visitors alike. The Saluda River is a popular spot for fishing, boating and tubing, and the Ware Shoals Drag Way has Friday night racing. The Ware Shoals Catfish Festival, held every Memorial Day weekend, offers a parade, live entertainment, and several thousand lbs. of catfish cooked every way imaginable. Ware Shoals has a typical southern climate, with mild winters followed by beautiful, sunny spring days and hot, steamy summers.
