The town of Ninety Six gets its unique name from some type of measurement, possibly the number of miles from the settlement to Keowee, which at that time was the capital of the Cherokee Nation. The town itself may have begun as a small trading post at mile marker ninety six, selling items such as rum, gunpowder and sugar that were commonly used to trade with the Indians. Such a store is known to have existed on the site since 1730, and in 1746 the colony's governor met at this spot to have a conference with the leader of the Cherokee Nation. Fort Ninety Six, later constructed here, withstood Indian attacks during the Anglo-Cherokee Wars of 1758–1761, and was later the site of the first battle of the American Revolution to be fought outside of New England in November of 1775.

Today Ninety-Six is a town of about 2,000 residents and a thriving tourist trade based on its historic significance and small-town charm. Local businesses include the National Historic Registry-listed Kinard House bed and breakfast, the Hen House gift and furniture store, and Cambridge Antiques. The town also offers numerous community events throughout the year. Winter kicks off with an old-fashioned Christmas celebration at the historic train depot, built in 1852. Celebrations continue with a holiday open house, a Christmas parade, and lunch with Santa, while the new year brings a Valentine's door decorating contest and father-daughter dance. In spring, when temperatures are warm and days are sunny, April brings a historical event called Lifeways of the Cherokee and Colonial Settlers, and May means it's time for the annual Miss Festival of Stars Beauty Pageant. Summer starts off with a bang as fireworks light up the night for the Independence Day Festival of Stars , while autumn brings cooler temperatures as well as the History and Ghost Walk and the Masquerade on Main and Trunk or Treat Halloween celebrations.
