About McCormick, SC - Happy to be your hometown Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor!
McCormick, South Carolina is sitting on top of a gold mine -- quite literally. In 1852 a man named Billy Dorn discovered gold in this location in 1852, but he didn't exactly strike it rich, so he sold out to one Cyrus McCormick. Cyrus tried to work the mine for a few more years, but it never panned out for him either, so in 1881 he built himself a town. The town, which was supposedly laid out according to the design of his wife Nettie, commemorates its past with street names including Gold and Mine. It was incorporated in 1882, one year after its founding, and today is the county seat of McCormick County and has a population of about 2,800 residents.
McCormick today retains much of its historic charm, with its downtown which was largely rebuilt after being nearly destroyed in a fire in 1884. Buildings still standing today include the 1884 McCormick Hotel, which is now a restaurant called Fannie Kate's, the Joseph Jennings Dorn House and Genealogy Center, which was built around 1917, the Hotel Keturah, built around 1910 and houses the McCormick Arts Council at the Keturah, the McCormick County Courthouse, built in 1923, and the McCormick Town Hall, built in 1938 out of locally-mined pink granite.
McCormick holds an annual Gold Rush Festival every September, a town celebration with a beauty pageant, a parade, and live entertainment. In winter, when temperatures are mild enough to make outdoor activity still pleasant, the town celebrates with its Holiday on Main event. Spring, when all the flowers are in bloom, brings the annual Spring Bonanza.
