About Hodges, SC - Happy to be your hometown Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor!
Hodges, South Carolina is a very small town located in Greenwood County. It only covers about ¾ square mile, and has a population of around 150 residents. Its only business is a U-Haul dealership, and the sole tourist attraction is the old Cokesbury College Building, an antebellum Greek Revival structure originally built to house the Masonic Female College of South Carolina and today used to host wedding receptions and other gatherings.
While Hodges today may seem like a typical sleepy small Southern town, it has a long and colorful history. The town was originally established by a family named Hodges prior to the American Revolution, a war in which several family members served with distinction. According to family legend, the family patriarch was shot and killed by a raiding party of Indians while at home on a leave of absence. His home was burned down and all but one of his four daughters killed. The fourth daughter, a woman named Dorothy, was forced to marry the Indian chief. She spent several years with him, eventually bearing him a son, but when he permitted her to return to visit her surviving family, she declined to return to him and instead later remarried. Her son, however, upon reaching adulthood, set off to rejoin his father's people, and was never heard from again.
By the late 1800s, Hodges had gained a reputation for being somewhat wild, at least according to long-term residents interviewed for a 1928 Charlotte Observer article. Supposedly the town was notorious for being home to numerous saloons, whose patrons gave it a reputation for "lawless drunkenness." By the time the article was written, however, all that was well in the past, and the town had no saloons, no policemen, no telephones, and hardly any crime to speak of. These days, no-one is reporting on the personal habits of Hodges residents, but the crime rate remains low, and the unemployment rate is also below state average. The climate is mild and pleasant, with winter temperatures averaging about 40 degrees and summers averaging around 80 degrees with highs in the low 90s.
